Mount Fuji, a Castle and some Monkeys

Part 2 Mount Fuji
Leaving Tokyo we headed in the direction of Mount Fuji.
Day 4
We glimpsed the Maglev tracks en route.
Stopping off at a service station, this notice board was in the ladies toilets.  Very organised! :)
Guess where we were heading!
We stopped off at Aokigahara, Sea of Trees, for a walk in the forest.

The forest is growing on lava rock.

We found a shrine in a cave.
It started snowing as we were about to leave.
The snow turned to rain as we travelled to our hotel.
We stayed in a traditional ryokan with an onsen.
The view from our window, which matched the view from the onsen.  At that point we were unprepared for what was hidden by the clouds!
Off to the onsen with my tiny towel!
We were given traditional clothing to wear in the ryokan.

The evening meal was a Japanese banquet.
His  meal.
My vegetarian meal.

A spot of knitting before bedtime.
Day 5
6am and I woke my husband up with the squeal I made when seeing this view our of our window!

Little did we know that Mount Fuji was hidden by that cloud the day before.

We watched the snow topped peak turn pink as the sun rose.

More snow had fallen overnight.

Sublimation at work.
A quick coffee and appropriately shaped biscuit,

then we wrapped up and went out to the lakeside.
Back to the inn for breakfast.

Passing through the snowy landscape.  It was the coldest day in April for 13 years, in that area.

There isn't usually snow here at this time of year.

Morning visit to Matsumoto Castle.

A sandwich with a difference; it was rather delicious!

In the afternoon we visited the snow monkeys in Jigokudani, also know as Hell Valley.

Travelling to Nagano for the night, we stopped at a service station and I discovered some locally spun silk.

The view from our hotel window.

It was still cold, so we bundled up and step out to discover the town.

We eat soba noodles, a regional speciality and tempura near the station.
Then back to the hotel
for a warming coffee and sweet bean paste cake.
